Gwinnett Senior Golden Games 2008

Opening Day Meeting 4/16/08

On April 16th at 11:00 A.M we opened our senior games with an overwhelming group of seniors ready to compete. Bob, our president, welcomed all our athletes and guests to our meeting and announced that we will probably be moving to larger quarters next year.  We signed up 409 participants and had to honor our cut-off date for lack of space.  But we will plan for a larger group next year.  This is a good problem and we are happy that so many seniors are participating in sporting events to stay healthy and live longer.

Everyone was given a gift and their packet when they arrived.

Bob led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, made some comments and introduced our special guests, District 1 Commissioner, Lorraine Green and District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau; followed by the presentation of Certificates to our 2008 Contributors.

A Special Thanks was also given to Dan Merkle, the Caterer, Mike Casanova who played the Piano Recital, Life Care of Lawrenceville that provided the refreshments and Delmar Gardens that provided the Desserts.

We had a short Business Meeting.  The March 17th meeting minutes were read, and the treasurer’s report was given. At the close of the meeting we had the Presentation of the Olympic Torch carried by Marie Joseph – 88 years young, assisted by Gail Fitzgerald.

Then came our delicious lunch :  choice of chicken or pork loin with/without gravy, mash potatoes, green beans, apple sauce, rolls, éclairs for dessert and plenty to drink; sweet/unsweet tea, lemonade, water, coffee.  The invocation was led by Bob and Eileen arranged the luncheon schedule which worked wonderfully, for everyone was served and eating by 12:30 P.M.

Lunch was followed by drawings for fabulous prizes, including a 6 month membership at the YMCA at Sugarloaf and a certificates for $150 for eyeglasses at the Vision Center. Door prizes were distributed by Susie Dodson and Dana Dow.  This year we are dividing our prizes between our opening and closing meetings. So be sure to come to the closing  on May 14th for another delicious lunch and a chance to win more prizes.  You must be present to win.

Compliments were plenty as everyone was leaving the senior center. It was a fun time for all.  Now it is time to play!  Good luck to everyone and LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Marie Hickman, Secretary
