Gwinnett Senior Golden Olympics 2006
March Meeting 3/20/06
Our President, Al Sandham called the meeting to order at 11:00 A.M. We had a great attendance this week. Many of our seniors are getting excited about the planning of our Olympics and want to get more involved, which is GREAT! We welcomed two new members, Brenda Holcomb and Deanna Bates.
Applications are rolling in. The number count is 267 as of the stated deadline, March 17th; however you still have time to sign up at the late price of $15. Even at that price, it’s a great bargain with the gift, the shirt and the opening and closing meals; not to mention the fun you will have competing for medals. So come join us! There will be one members’ meeting at the closing that everyone should attend.
Our treasurer, Eileen, gave her report. At the start of the 2006 games we have a balance of $11,942.86. Our athletes were surprisingly generous this year; we received $1194 from them and a total of $3654 in donations. We have some wonderful door prizes, including a $100 savings bond and a night at a beautiful & lavish hotel! Thank you Dana, for getting these prizes for us. So get that application in. Remember the dates: Friday April 21 to Friday May 19. Entries will be returned after March 31st.
All our venue managers are ready for the games. But we can always use volunteers. So if you want to play and work too, check the volunteer box on the application. Heather has the volunteer list and will put together the packet for managers. In about 2 weeks we will receive our participant lists, phone numbers and ages. Also, venue managers will need a medal count.
If you should know of any company or individual that wants to contribute to our Senior Olympics, please contact Judith Eubanks 678-985-8692. She is organizing all prizes and donations. Thank you members for getting donations and prizes for us and a special thank you to Diane Knight for getting over 20 prizes and donations; for her time, effort and hard work. Al announced that Diane will be our Sponsorship Chairperson. There is one position still open – Outreach Chairperson. Who will fill that position? Call Al.
Our entertainment this year is Emily Sheffield. For those who had the opportunity to watch her perform raves about how wonderful she is. For others that had seen her perform before were delighted to hear she will be back. I can’t wait!!!!
Our schedule looks like this: 11:30 A.M. we eat, then our entertainment, then door prizes. It may change, but as of this meeting this is what we voted on.
Our Senior Sports Club that takes place the 3rd Wednesday each month, will not meet in April or May because of our Olympics.
The Field Game Venue Managers resolved the issues we had with the scheduling of the different events. The sign in will be at 9:00 A.M. and participants will be sent to individual games based on entries and when finished will move to their next event.
Al will pick up any additional equipment needed for the Olympics.
Also he announced that he will apply for the 501C3 application.
A reminder from Bob. He will need volunteers for the Atlanta Senior Olympics Shuffleboard games on May 23 and May 24. from 9:30 A.M.-6:00 P.M. For those interested, on Monday, April 10th from 11-2 he will teach a shuffleboard clinic for the volunteers. Contact Bob Giselbach for more information.
The Mayor Walk is May 2nd at 9:00 A.M. $10. for those that are not walking in our Olympics on the same day.
Our Senior Olympics are open to seniors from age 50 and over. You will compete with others your own age. Reminder: last day to sign up is March 31st.
There was no further new business to discuss so Al adjourned the meeting.
Our next Senior Olympics meeting is April 17th. See you then.
Respectfully Submitted,
Marie
